Mixed media works on canvas by Cynthia Knott and photographer Michael Turner, 2021.
The Sea
Knott and poet Billy Collins collaborated on the book, "The Sea" published for Cynthia's 1992 exhibit at Tibor De Nagy gallery. The book comprises poems, the essay, and images of the paintings including the following.
"It requires a certain amount of courage to paint seascapes today. The history a painter must confront is imposing: Turner, Homer, Ryder (to name only a few). The strength of Cynthia Knott's paintings comes through her acute awareness of the subject's history as well as from an insistence on remaininga painter true to our time and to herself. She is an artist who works from within, a spiritual person with a lyrical
touch, who expresses both hope and concern.
...the final results of these paintings become not only about nature, but also about time and memory. The time in one's life to look backward and forward, and the memory to work through those thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Cynthia Knott achieves this through a diligent combination of observation, imagination and the artistic process."

Horizon
You can use the brush of a Japanese monk
or a pencil stub from a race track.
As long as you draw the line a third
the way up from the bottom of the page
the effect is the same: the world suddenly
divided into its elemental realms.
A moment ago there was only a piece of paper.
Now there is earth and sky, sky and sea.
You were sitting alone in a small room.
Now you are walking into the heat of a vast desert
or standing on the ledge of a winter beach
watching the light on the water, light in the air.
